Fraunhofer develops AI-based platform for emergency management
Researchers at Fraunhofer EMI are building a data-driven platform to help municipalities respond more effectively to natural disasters and infrastructure failures.
The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics (EMI) is developing an AI-driven platform designed to assist emergency response teams and municipalities during crises. Known as RegioGuard-PRO, the system aims to consolidate fragmented data sources into a unified operational picture, addressing the challenge of managing complex events such as floods or power outages.
By leveraging AI to process large datasets—ranging from environmental and weather data to building models and infrastructure maps—the platform can automatically highlight at-risk areas. Dr. Kai Fischer, a researcher at Fraunhofer EMI, stated that the technology reduces the need for manual data interpretation, allowing for faster deployment of resources. The system also includes an AI-based natural language interface, enabling emergency personnel to query information via voice commands.
The project integrates findings from previous research into municipal resilience and logistics monitoring. Fraunhofer EMI plans to deliver a functional demonstrator of the technology within two years, providing local authorities with a tool for real-time situational awareness.
