Fraunhofer develops AI platform to assist in public crisis management
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics are building a data-driven platform to help municipalities manage disasters by integrating fragmented information sources.
The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics (EMI) is developing an AI-powered dashboard under the RegioGuard-PRO project to improve disaster response for public agencies. The platform aims to resolve the challenge of fragmented data, which often hinders situational awareness during emergencies such as floods or infrastructure failures.
The project builds upon previous research from the AKRIMA and HERAKLION initiatives, which focused on AI-powered crisis monitoring and municipal resilience. By aggregating social, environmental, infrastructure, and weather data, the new system aims to automate risk detection. Researcher Kai Fischer noted that the system can automatically identify at-risk infrastructure, such as buildings in flood zones, which previously required time-consuming manual map analysis.
To assist emergency responders, the platform includes an AI-based interface that allows users to query information using natural language. This system serves as a central hub for real-time warnings and situational assessments. Researchers expect to deliver a functional demonstrator within two years.
