Fraunhofer Institute researchers are developing a new, miniaturized ozone generator for water disinfection. The project aims to integrate the device into applications such as beverage dispensers and household appliances where hygiene is critical.

Ozone offers an alternative to traditional methods like chlorine and UV light, being environmentally friendly and leaving water tasteless. Its high oxidation potential effectively breaks down pathogens by disrupting their cell membranes.

The new generator operates via electrolysis, producing ozone directly from water. It features an integrated sensor chip and microprocessor-based control for measuring and regulating the process. Development involves specialized techniques, including diamond-coated silicon electrodes.

The "MIKROOZON" project is part of a broader initiative to introduce ozone for water treatment in new contexts. The project receives funding from the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the European Union.
