Researchers at Fraunhofer IPA (Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation) have developed an eight-legged robot modeled on the movement principles of spiders. This mobile robot is designed to navigate hazardous and inaccessible terrains.

The robot mimics spiders' hydraulically operated limbs, enabling agile movement over obstacles like ditches and ruts. Its primary function is to provide emergency responders with visual and sensor data from accident sites, such as chemical spills or fires. It can transmit live images and data on hazardous substances.

Each leg is equipped with pneumatic drive bellows that bend and extend the limbs, functioning similarly to a spider's muscles and joints. The robot's body houses necessary components like the control unit and pumps, and it can carry various sensors depending on the application. This pneumatic system allows the robot to move by keeping four legs on the ground while repositioning the other four.

A key aspect is its manufacturing process. Fraunhofer IPA researchers utilize 3D printing, specifically selective laser sintering (SLS) of plastics. This method allows for the cost-effective production of lightweight components with complex geometries, reducing assembly effort and material waste. The low production cost suggests potential for single-use deployment.

The prototype robot was showcased at the EuroMold 2011 trade fair. This technology offers new capabilities for reconnoitering dangerous areas and gathering critical information.
