Fraunhofer Develops Synthetic DNA for Future Mass Storage

Fraunhofer Institutes are developing a microchip platform for synthetic DNA as a future mass storage medium. The initiative aims to address the growing global data volume.

Researchers at Fraunhofer Institutes are developing a novel microchip platform for synthetic DNA, intended to serve as a future mass storage medium. This technology aims to address the escalating global data volumes that are pushing the limits of traditional storage solutions.

The project, named BIOSYNTH, involves three Fraunhofer Institutes collaborating to create a modular system for synthesizing DNA, RNA, and peptides. The goal is to enable a high-throughput method for encoding information into DNA, offering exceptionally high storage density and long-term stability.

Digital data is encoded into DNA strands using the nucleotide bases Guanine (G), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Adenine (A). While the synthesis process can introduce errors, researchers have developed algorithms and monitoring systems to minimize these inaccuracies and ensure data integrity.

The new approach utilizes microchip fabrication techniques to significantly reduce the volume of individual samples and the number of reaction cells per chip. This facilitates more efficient and resource-saving data storage in DNA format for long-term archival purposes.
