Fraunhofer develops wound dressings with antimicrobial and healing agents

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS in Dresden are developing novel wound dressings. These dressings are produced using electrospinning from the biodegradable polymer polylactic acid (PLA). The development focuses on combining multiple active ingredients into a single wound membrane to prevent infections and accelerate healing.

The new wound dressings integrate three distinct functionalities: antibacterial bacteriophages, proteins that promote skin cell growth, and antiseptic MXenes. The approach aims to offer a natural alternative to antibiotics and speed up skin regeneration. The goal is to reduce the burden of treating chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot problems.

Electrospinning is employed because the process allows sensitive biological components, like proteins and phages, to be processed without high temperatures. A challenge with the method is ensuring that the high voltage does not damage the biological materials. The different ingredients also have varying placement requirements within the membrane, as MXenes require heat and radiation for optimal efficacy.

Material development and the integration of ingredients are scheduled for completion by May 2027. The research team is inviting clinical partners to participate in testing to support regulatory approval. The project is funded by the M-ERA.NET consortium.
