Fraunhofer establishes AI chip design center in Heilbronn
Fraunhofer's HNFIZ research centers in Heilbronn are launching the Chip AI research and innovation center. The center will develop AI chip design with and for AI, aiming to bolster Germany's competitiveness.
Heilbronn, Germany – Fraunhofer Heilbronn Research and Innovation Centers (HNFIZ) are establishing a new Chip AI research and innovation center in Heilbronn. The initiative aims to strengthen Germany's position in AI chip design and development by utilizing artificial intelligence in both the design of chips and in enhancing the design processes themselves.
The move responds to the rapid growth in the AI sector and the increasing demand for more powerful AI chips. The center, a collaborative effort between the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS), seeks to drive innovation and bolster Germany's competitiveness in high-tech fields. The Dieter Schwarz Foundation is providing funding for the center's operations.
Within the Chip AI center, Fraunhofer IAF will focus on developing high-performance semiconductor chips for modern AI systems and employing AI to automate chip design processes. The goal is to make chip design more efficient and to create solutions for intellectual property protection, as well as verification and certification for safety-critical applications in areas like transportation and robotics. A particular focus will be on CMOS circuits due to their efficiency and durability.
Fraunhofer IIS, in turn, will work on neuromorphic hardware architectures for edge AI applications. This includes leveraging technologies like spiking neural networks for energy-efficient local data processing, thereby contributing to Europe's technological sovereignty in the AI sector. Close collaboration with the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) ecosystem is crucial for the project's success.
