The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF is intensifying its research and development efforts in future energy technologies. This initiative aims to meet the anticipated tripling of electricity demand in industrialized nations by 2050, driven by electrification and digital transformation, while also promoting climate neutrality and system resilience.

The institute's work focuses on enhancing and refining technologies such as hydrogen production and storage, improving the efficiency of geothermal systems, and pursuing the long-term potential of nuclear fusion as an eco-friendly energy source. These advancements are seen as critical for transforming the energy landscape.

Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has designated 2025 as the "Science Year" dedicated to these future energy forms. Fraunhofer, in collaboration with industry and government, is actively contributing to finding solutions for a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient energy system.

Professor Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, stated that the institute's role is to increase the efficiency of promising future technologies while remaining open to new ones, contributing to the global answer for the energy system of the future.
