Fraunhofer Institutes Announce Leadership Changes and New Initiatives
Fraunhofer Institutes have revealed significant developments including leadership appointments, the establishment of new research sites, and advancements in medical and energy technologies.

Fraunhofer Institutes are implementing several key developments, including changes in leadership, expansion of research facilities, and technological advancements. Effective October 1, 2026, Prof. Michael Sedlmair has joined the leadership team of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD). He will collaborate with Dr. Matthias Unbescheiden to guide the institute's scientific and strategic development across its Darmstadt and Rostock locations. Prof. Sedlmair's work will focus on human-centered artificial intelligence and the application of visual computing technologies.
Furthermore, Fraunhofer is expanding its presence in Cottbus with the establishment of new innovation centers within the Lausitz Science Park. These centers will concentrate on energy transition, microelectronics, and AI-driven material diagnostics. This initiative aims to support the region's structural transformation, create new employment opportunities, and accelerate the transfer of research findings into industrial applications.
In the fields of materials and medical technology, Fraunhofer researchers are developing novel, sustainable bio-inks for 3D bioprinting. These advanced inks are designed to create functional organs and tissues, accurately replicating physiological structures without chemical modification, which holds promise for organ transplantation and drug development.
Within the construction and energy sector, Fraunhofer IBP and IBP are working on solutions to accelerate the installation of heat pumps as part of Germany's energy transition strategy. The introduction of new digital tools and standardized installation processes aims to improve the efficiency of heat pump deployment and contribute to achieving climate goals.
