The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has opened Europe's first IBM Quantum System One quantum computer in Ehningen, Germany, establishing a research platform for businesses and research institutions. The initiative aims to bolster German and European technological sovereignty in the field of quantum computing.

The platform, operating under German data protection laws, provides a secure environment for the development and application of quantum algorithms. This move is significant as quantum computing is anticipated to revolutionize various industries, including logistics, medicine, materials science, and energy management.

"We must now develop the expertise for various application scenarios, compatible algorithms, and new business models," stated Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. IBM believes the platform will accelerate progress and grant companies of all sizes access to quantum computing capabilities.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research actively supports quantum technology development. The ministry highlights that quantum sensors, communication, and computing offer solutions to previously intractable scientific, economic, and societal challenges.

The state of Baden-Württemberg views the quantum computer as a step towards shaping key future technologies. The platform aims to foster a German quantum technology ecosystem and strengthen Germany's and Europe's technological independence.
