Fraunhofer project cuts heat pump installation times by up to 40 percent
Fraunhofer research institutes and partners have developed digital tools and methods to speed up and improve the efficiency of heat pump installations. The goal is to reduce installation times by up to 40 percent.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), in collaboration with industry partners, have developed new digital tools and practical methods to accelerate heat pump installations. The WESPE project aims to make heat pump retrofits more efficient and reduce installation times by up to 40 percent, addressing a shortage of skilled workers in the heating sector.
The project combines field testing, standardized components, and augmented reality planning tools. A newly developed web-based information platform and the Heat Pump PlanAR prototype are designed to simplify planning, quotation preparation, and the installation process itself. Fifteen installation companies are participating, testing the new procedures at 30 sites while collecting data on the time required for various work steps.
Field trials conducted by Fraunhofer IBP have shown that standardized parts, pre-assembled units, and optimized processes can significantly reduce installation time and improve efficiency. This is particularly important given the increasing demand for heat pumps and the concurrent shortage of qualified installers.
The WESPE project addresses bottlenecks in the installation process, both in office work and on-site. The developed digital tools assist in assessing site conditions, improving customer communication, coordinating logistics, and speeding up material procurement, collectively streamlining the entire installation chain.
