Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a leading European applied research organization, reported a significant increase in spin-off companies during 2021. Despite ongoing pandemic restrictions, 30 teams successfully founded new businesses based on Fraunhofer's technology and expertise, a rise of approximately 15 percent compared to 2020.

These spin-offs focus on developing market-ready applications in forward-looking fields such as sensors, artificial intelligence, and platform-based ecosystems, alongside imaging, additive manufacturing, and sustainable materials. Fraunhofer Venture, the institute's dedicated spin-off division, currently supports around 60 companies and reported selling its stakes in four entities last year, including Multiphoton Optics.

Spin-off companies from Fraunhofer also saw increased investor interest in 2021. Funding rounds were completed significantly earlier than in previous years, with investments per round increasing by approximately 10 percent. International investors are increasingly targeting German research-based ventures, with examples like Reliance New Energy Solar Ltd. investing in NexWafe GmbH and Ampeers Energy GmbH securing investment from Austrian Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft.

Fraunhofer President Prof. Reimund Neugebauer highlighted the importance of these high-tech spin-offs as a crucial pathway for transferring innovations to industry and society. He emphasized that combining scientific excellence with entrepreneurial spirit is key to addressing societal challenges like digitalization and sustainability.
