Freelander 8 global validation programme complete ahead of international test drives
Freelander has outlined the global validation programme for the Freelander 8. The programme involved over 1,000 vehicles across more than 50 road types worldwide. International test drives are set to begin soon.
Freelander has completed its global validation programme for the upcoming Freelander 8 model, utilizing over 1,000 test vehicles across more than 50 road types globally. This extensive testing precedes the vehicle's first international test drives, scheduled for later this month. Key engineering results from the program were presented at the Freelander Global Brand Launch event in Abu Dhabi on September 29.
The validation involved rigorous testing, with over 200 vehicles dedicated to all-terrain durability, accumulating 2.15 million kilometers. Testing covered diverse environments including deserts, gravel, rocky terrain, steep inclines, water crossings, and paved roads, alongside 12 hours of extreme rain testing. The Freelander 8 has been developed with global markets in mind, featuring three international variants: left-hand drive, right-hand drive, and EU specification, all built on a common platform.
Development for challenging conditions, such as those found in the Middle East with high temperatures and dust, has been a key focus. The vehicle's Intelligent All-Terrain System (i-ATS) offers nine modes, including a dedicated Sand Mode, alongside Smart and Expert modes. The air-conditioning system is designed for rapid cooling, with internal tests showing significant temperature drops within minutes.
According to the company, the Freelander 8 is capable of passing an 800 mm cross-axle test, climbing gradients up to 70% (approximately 35 degrees), and wading through water up to 900 mm deep. These capabilities are supported by the i-ATS and an All-Terrain Dual Lock System. Maximum ground clearance is 266 mm. Peter Matkin, Chief Engineer at Chery International R&D Centre, stated the vehicle is designed to ensure drivers can "drive with confidence" anywhere.
The international test drives will take place at the 2026 Chery International User Summit in Wuhu. Attendees will also have the opportunity to interact with Mornine, an AI humanoid robot from Chery International's AiMOGA brand.
