French Blood Center Systems Targeted in Cyberattack
The Etablissement Français du Sang (EFS) confirmed that three of its facilities were impacted by a cyberattack on November 2, targeting their cold storage monitoring systems.
The French blood service agency, Etablissement Français du Sang (EFS), reported that monitoring and control systems at three of its locations were compromised on November 2 due to a vulnerability within a third-party supplier's software. The systems were targeted by a cyberattack that specifically manipulated temperature controls.
The breach affected cold storage units housing biological samples and blood products intended for medical use. According to the EFS, internal monitoring and alarm systems successfully detected the unauthorized interference, preventing any actual damage to the stored inventory. The agency confirmed that all blood products and samples remain intact.
Upon detection, the EFS isolated and deactivated the compromised hardware, transferring the affected inventory to alternative facilities. This incident follows a broader wave of attacks across Europe that have targeted similar cold chain infrastructure in the retail sector over the past month.
