French Music Market Sees Growth Driven by Streaming and Local Artists

France's recorded music market achieved a significant milestone in 2025, exceeding €1.071 billion in revenue and extending a streak of nine consecutive years of growth. The market saw a 3.9% year-on-year increase, largely attributed to the continued rise of music streaming services and an increasingly digitally engaged population.

Streaming now accounts for over 78% of the total revenue for recorded music in France, demonstrating its central role in the industry's economic landscape. Alongside digital growth, there is a notable resurgence in physical formats, which now represent 22% of total revenue. Vinyl records alone make up 12% of this segment, indicating a growing interest among collectors and younger audiences for tangible music products.

The French music scene is characterized by a strong local identity, with French-language artists and productions dominating the charts. In 2025, French artists accounted for a substantial portion of top-selling albums and highly streamed tracks, highlighting the market's preference for domestic content. Hip-hop, in particular, has emerged as a dominant genre, alongside a robust pop and electronic music scene.

This ecosystem thrives on the interdependence between streaming platforms and local artists. While platforms like Spotify and Deezer rely on local content to attract and retain users, artists and labels leverage these services for crucial visibility and monetization. Despite the overall positive trend, France's subscription penetration for music services lags behind other major global markets.
