Frequentis Discusses Transition from GSM-R to FRMCS
Frequentis AG representatives discussed the transition from current GSM-R technology to the future FRMCS solution for railways. Their FTS 3020 system supports this development.

Vienna-based technology company Frequentis AG has released details regarding the evolution of communication systems for rail transport. Company experts Alistair McGill and Markus Myslivec spoke with Railway-News about the shift from the current GSM-R technology to the upcoming Future Railway Mobile Communications (FRMCS) standard.
Frequentis' Fixed Terminal Rail System (FTS 3020) is designed to support this technological transition within the railway sector. GSM-R is currently widely deployed across European rail networks, but its lifecycle is nearing its end. FRMCS is positioned as the next-generation communication solution, building upon GSM Evolution (GSM-EDGE Evolution) and LTE technologies.
The FRMCS system is expected to enhance the reliability, safety, and capacity of railway communications. It is intended to enable new services, such as high-quality data transmission and real-time video, for trains and railway infrastructure.
Frequentis specializes in communication and information systems for safety-critical sectors including aviation, public transport, and defense. The company aims to support the railway industry's move towards more modern and efficient communication solutions.
