Fresenius Medical Care Refines China Strategy, Focuses on Localized Products

Fresenius Medical Care (FME) has announced adjustments to its commercial strategy in China, aiming to support long-term growth, sharpen its market positioning, and increase focus on locally relevant products and innovation.

The company will concentrate its China activities on selected technologies for in-center dialysis and critical care, while adjusting parts of its existing product portfolio and go-to-market model. Key products like the 5008S CAREsystem and multiFiltratePRO will be prioritized. Simultaneously, FME will discontinue the local production and sale of the 4008A hemodialysis system and exit its peritoneal dialysis business in China. The company states that existing market obligations will continue to be fulfilled.

China represents approximately 6% to 7% of Fresenius Medical Care's Care Enablement business revenues. The company views the market as offering long-term growth potential, supported by the increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease, expansion of dialysis care, and growing demand for more advanced treatment technologies.

The portfolio changes are expected to result in approximately €110 million in one-time costs during the third quarter of 2026. These costs are primarily due to impairment charges, scrappage, and termination expenses, and will be treated as a special item. Fresenius Medical Care anticipates that these adjustments will not materially affect the future revenue outlook for its China Care Enablement operations.

Additionally, the company has strengthened its local leadership, appointing Rex Liu as Market General Manager. The revised strategy aims to enhance the company's ability to compete and grow in the Chinese market by directing resources toward product categories and technologies deemed better aligned with the evolving Chinese renal care market.
