FRITZ!OS 8.50 Update Introduces DNS Filter and Auto-Prioritization

FRITZ! GmbH has released FRITZ!OS 8.50, a significant update for its range of networking devices. Key new features include a DNS filter to help block access to unwanted websites and automatic data prioritization for online gaming and home office applications.

The FRITZ!OS 8.50 update aims to enhance the security and stability of home networks. The new DNS filter allows users to block specific internet addresses on devices within their home network, such as smartphones and computers. Users can leverage publicly available filter lists to block advertising, trackers, and malware. This feature is initially rolling out to the FRITZ!Box 7690 and will be progressively available for other selected models.

In addition, the update introduces automatic prioritization for real-time applications. This means the FRITZ!Box can now automatically identify and prioritize traffic for activities like online gaming and video conferencing, ensuring a more stable connection. The prioritization status is visible within the user interface and can be reviewed up to 24 hours later.

The update also includes a new "Smart Check" feature within the MyFRITZ!App. This provides users with an overview of their FRITZ!Box status directly on the app's home screen, offering helpful tips and warnings related to internet, telephony, home network, Wi-Fi, LAN, USB, smart home, and security.

The FRITZ!OS 8.50 update is initially available for the FRITZ!Box 7690 and will follow for other current FRITZ!Box and FRITZ!Repeater models in the coming weeks. Users with auto-update enabled will receive it automatically, or it can be initiated manually via the fritz.box interface.
