Frugal Strategies to Combat Extreme Heat Without Air Conditioning

Extreme heat waves pose a significant health risk, particularly in regions where homes lack air conditioning. Experts emphasize the importance of understanding affordable and efficient ways to cool both the body and living spaces without relying on expensive machinery.

Recognizing the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is vital. These symptoms can include muscle cramps, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, confusion, and elevated body temperature. In the U.S. alone, over 700 deaths are attributed to extreme heat annually.

Cost-effective methods for personal cooling involve staying adequately hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Homemade cooling packs, such as a rice-filled sock placed in the freezer for neck or bed use, can provide relief. Surprisingly, lukewarm showers are recommended over ice-cold ones, as they can more effectively lower core body temperature according to some studies.

Homes can be kept cooler by blocking sunlight with curtains and blinds. Using materials like cardboard or aluminum foil on windows can offer additional insulation. For sleeping, placing a mattress directly on the floor can help, as cooler air tends to be at lower levels.
