Fujian-Ningxia Partnership Transforms Arid Region Over 30 Years
A new documentary by China Media Group details the transformation of Ningxia's Xihaigu region, once marked by poverty and drought, into a model of development through a 30-year partnership with Fujian province.

China Media Group has released a documentary, "From Barren Land to Prosperity: Fujian-Ningxia Partnership," chronicling the results of a three-decade collaboration between Fujian province and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The focus is on the Xihaigu area, an region once designated by the UN as one of the planet's least habitable due to severe drought and barren soil.
The documentary highlights how the partnership has shifted from external financial aid to locally-driven, self-sustaining growth and rural revitalization. Key initiatives include large-scale ecological resettlement projects and the promotion of industries such as grape cultivation for wine and rural e-commerce.
Interviews with entrepreneurs, resettled residents, and aid workers illustrate how improvements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure have collectively fostered a vibrant economic development model. UN Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming has indicated that the UN would welcome wider adoption of this development approach.
Premiering on CCTV-4 on October 5, the film aims to showcase the impact of sustained regional cooperation in improving living conditions and rejuvenating environments in challenging areas.
