Fujian-Ningxia Partnership Transforms Barren Land into Prosperity Over 30 Years

A 30-year partnership between China's eastern Fujian province and the western Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has transformed the Xihaigu area, once deemed one of the least habitable places on Earth, into a notable center for socio-economic development and ecological restoration. The region, previously marked by chronic drought and poverty, has undergone a significant transformation.

The success is attributed to a national strategy initiated in 1996, which encouraged more developed coastal regions to aid poverty alleviation efforts in the western interior. China Media Group's documentary, "From Barren Land to Prosperity: Fujian-Ningxia Partnership," highlights this 30-year milestone. The film details how Ningxia, with support from Fujian's investments and expertise, transitioned from relying on external aid to fostering locally driven, self-sustaining growth and rural revitalization.

Key factors in this development include large-scale ecological relocation projects, the promotion of new industries such as viticulture and rural e-commerce, and consistent improvements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Interviews with entrepreneurs, relocated residents, and aid workers illustrate the effectiveness of this development model.

United Nations Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming has stated that the UN would welcome broader applications of this development model. The documentary "From Barren Land to Prosperity" premiered on CCTV-4 on October 5.
