Fukushima Nuclear Accident Health Consequences Assessed
Radiation doses to the public following the Fukushima nuclear accident were generally low. However, the displacement and social disruption caused by evacuation measures have led to significant psychological and social consequences.

Health consequences stemming from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan, which occurred on March 11, 2011, have been assessed through various studies. While significant radiation-related health issues have not been widespread, the mandatory evacuation and relocation measures implemented post-accident have resulted in extensive social and psychological impacts.
Residents in the Fukushima vicinity were exposed to radioactive fallout. Primary exposure pathways included external irradiation from the radioactive cloud and ground deposition, and internal exposure through inhalation and ingestion. Key radionuclides involved were iodine-131 and cesium-137. Iodine-131, despite its short half-life, concentrates in the thyroid gland, particularly in children. Cesium-137 poses a long-term risk due to its 30-year half-life.
Estimates indicate that average lifetime effective radiation doses for adults in Fukushima Prefecture were 10 millisieverts (mSv) or less. Doses for one-year-old infants were approximately double. Workers at the plant received an average effective dose of about 12 mSv during the first 19 months after the accident. A small percentage of the workforce received doses exceeding 100 mSv.
Conversely, the large-scale evacuations and population displacement following the disaster led to significant social and economic repercussions. Elderly individuals, in particular, experienced increased mortality in temporary housing. Furthermore, increased risks of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, and substantial mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety, have been reported. Behavioral problems among evacuated children have also been observed.
