Fungi Perfecti Publishes Complete Genome of Rare Agarikon Fungus

Mycologist Paul Stamets and scientists at Fungi Perfecti have successfully sequenced and assembled the complete genome of the rare Agarikon fungus (Laricifomes officinalis). The findings were published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics.

The Agarikon fungus is considered endangered due to habitat loss in old-growth forests. The availability of its complete genome provides the scientific community with a crucial reference for studying the fungus's genetic diversity, population dynamics, and the biosynthesis of its natural compounds.

"A complete genome changes what's possible," stated Chase Beathard, Director of Research & Development at Fungi Perfecti. He explained that the genomic reference enables more confident identification, comparison of different populations, and investigation into the genetic pathways responsible for the fungus's life processes and metabolite production.

Fungi Perfecti maintains the world's largest culture library of Agarikon, aimed at preserving the genetic diversity of this threatened species. The company also conducts research on fungi for its Host Defense® Mushrooms™ product line.
