GA-ASI and MBDA to Integrate SPEAR Weapons on Unmanned Aircraft
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) and MBDA have agreed to integrate MBDA's SPEAR missile onto GA-ASI's future unmanned aircraft systems. The collaboration aims to equip the MQ-9B aircraft and Gambit 6 combat drones with the advanced weaponry.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI), a U.S. developer of unmanned aircraft, and European missile manufacturer MBDA have committed to integrating MBDA's SPEAR precision strike missile onto GA-ASI's future unmanned platforms. The agreement, finalized at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, outlines the joint effort to equip the MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft and the Gambit 6 collaborative combat aircraft (CCA) with the SPEAR weapon system.
This collaboration deepens the existing relationship between the two companies, which previously involved integrating MBDA's Brimstone missile onto the UK's Protector RG Mk1, a variant of the MQ-9B. According to GA-ASI, extending this partnership to include the SPEAR missile on their broader MQ-9B line and the Gambit CCA represents a natural progression.
The SPEAR missile is designed for precision surface attack missions with a focus on delivering effects with low collateral damage. Its capabilities aim to allow launch aircraft to remain at a safe distance from hostile air defenses while engaging targets beyond the horizon, enhancing survivability.
GA-ASI's MQ-9B is a long-endurance, multi-mission uncrewed aircraft already acquired or on order by multiple nations. The Gambit CCA is designed for offensive roles, including electronic warfare and suppression of enemy air defenses. Combining these advanced unmanned platforms with MBDA's SPEAR missile is expected to create a relevant and rapidly deployable new capability for global militaries.
