Game Developer Discusses Ending Physical Disc Production with Sony
Japanese game developer Nippon Ichi Software has expressed concern over Sony's plan to cease production of physical discs for new games by 2028. The company is in discussions with Sony, hoping to find a compromise.
Tokyo – Game developer Nippon Ichi Software is in discussions with Sony regarding the planned cessation of physical disc production for new PlayStation games after 2028. The company's CEO, Koichi Kitakado, has voiced concerns about the decision but believes a compromise may be possible.
The company is known not only for releasing standard physical games but also for its high-quality limited editions that include game discs alongside various merchandise. Nippon Ichi has previously experimented with digital release methods, such as keycards for Nintendo Switch, but these faced strong opposition from the player community.
"My personal understanding is that physical limited editions are an important part of our business model. We intend to continue producing these physical games and provide high-quality products to our customers," Kitakado stated, referencing Sony's decision.
Kitakado has discussed the issue directly with Sony and believes the company is listening to customer feedback. While selling game codes in special packages is a potential solution, it may not be the only one, and future structures might evolve.
It remains unclear whether Sony intends to retract or delay its decision to stop producing physical game discs. The ultimate outcome for physical game releases is still uncertain.
