Liquid Swords, the studio responsible for the open-world action game Samson, has filed for bankruptcy. The company reportedly owes employees several months of unpaid wages, prompting around 30 staff members to seek compensation from the local government. A bankruptcy administrator is currently seeking a buyer to resolve the company's financial situation.

The studio was founded by Christofer Sundberg, a co-founder of Avalanche Studios and creative director for the Just Cause series. Samson, released in April, was Liquid Swords' first major title. No other games have been released by the company since.

Samson, in development since 2020, was described as a roguelike game with similarities to Grand Theft Auto IV. Set in a world where the player character owes $100,000, the objective is to repay the debt through various criminal missions. The game emphasizes melee combat without firearms, offering a first-person fighting experience. Critically, the game received mixed reviews, with a Metascore of 51 from critics and a user score of 5.2 on Metacritic.

Players cited numerous bugs and an underdeveloped combat system as major criticisms, with some suggesting the game felt dated. However, some reviewers praised the game's atmosphere and its optimization for the Steam Deck handheld console. Despite these mixed opinions, the game's reception and financial struggles ultimately led to the company's bankruptcy. Samson remains Liquid Swords' only released title.
