Game Engine Defold Adds Official Support for Xbox Development

The free, cross-platform game engine Defold has officially added support for Microsoft Xbox console development. The update makes Xbox development resources available to approved developers.

The Defold Foundation has released version 1.14.0 of its open-source, cross-platform game engine, officially adding support for Microsoft Xbox game development. Announced on October 12, the update makes relevant resources available to developers approved by Microsoft.

Originally developed by King, the studio behind "Candy Crush," and now part of Microsoft, Defold is known for its focus on performance and efficient cross-platform workflows. The engine supports deployment to web, mobile, desktop, and game consoles, allowing developers to use a single codebase across multiple targets.

This expansion to Xbox follows previous support for the Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation 4 and 5 consoles. With this integration, Defold now covers development for all three major console families: Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo.

Developers seeking to create games for Xbox using Defold must first obtain development qualification through Microsoft's ID@Xbox program. Upon approval, they can apply for access to Defold's Xbox resources, which include platform-specific integrations for features like user management and game saves, along with the necessary tools and documentation for building and testing Xbox titles.
