Warner Bros. has set June 6, 2029, as the global release date for "Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest," the first theatrical film within the popular fantasy franchise. The project is being directed by Owen Harris and written by Beau Willimon.
The film's narrative will center on the historical events surrounding Aegon I Targaryen, an ancestor of the Targaryen family, and his campaign to conquer Westeros. This period predates the events of the original "Game of Thrones" television series by several centuries, and Aegon I has not been previously depicted in any official screen adaptations.
The story draws from George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood," which chronicles Aegon's conquest, the subsequent establishment of the Targaryen dynasty, and the unification of the Seven Kingdoms under the Iron Throne.
Director Owen Harris has prior experience within the franchise, having directed episodes of the prequel series "House of the Dragon." Writer Beau Willimon is known for his work as the creator of Netflix's "House of Cards" and his involvement with the "Star Wars" series "Andor."
Casting details, including who will portray Aegon I, have not yet been announced. The film was initially revealed as part of Warner Bros.' future slate at CinemaCon in 2026.
