Garðabær has opened registration for its summer employment program, Vinnuskólinn, aimed at 14-16 year olds for the summer of 2019. The program provides opportunities for young people to gain work experience and earn wages.

The program is open to individuals born in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Registration is conducted through Garðabær's recruitment website, with guardians needing to register on behalf of the youth. It is important to note that the participant must have their own bank account for registration. Information regarding tax liability starting from age 16 and the transfer of personal tax allowances to employers will be provided separately.

The work period is scheduled to begin on June 11 for those born in 2003 and 2004, and on June 13 for those born in 2005. The program is expected to conclude on July 25. Job duties will encompass general gardening, planting, and maintenance work in public areas. For older participants (15-16 years old), there are also opportunities for assistant roles in various institutions, such as preschools and community centers.

Working hours vary based on age. 14-year-olds will work approximately 16 hours per week, while 15-16 year olds can work up to 27.5 hours per week. Wages are determined by age and hours worked, calculated as a percentage of the minimum wage set by collective agreements.
