Garmin Pilot adds mobile IFR clearance delivery

Garmin has rolled out Mobile Clearance Delivery, a new feature within its Garmin Pilot application that allows users to obtain and cancel Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) clearances electronically. This development, a collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and MITRE, aims to streamline the process for general and business aviation pilots.

The feature is available to Garmin Pilot Premium subscribers using iOS devices and is integrated into the Flights page of the application. It is designed to reduce reliance on radio or phone communications with air traffic control (ATC) by enabling pilots to receive, review, and accept clearances within the app before departure.

Once a clearance is accepted, pilots can overlay the cleared route onto their Garmin Pilot map and, if equipped, transmit it to compatible avionics via Connext. The clearance remains accessible in text format within the app for clarity throughout the flight and for 48 hours post-flight.

Future enhancements will allow users to cancel IFR clearances directly through the app after landing, a capability particularly beneficial at uncontrolled airports or when ATC towers are closed. This is expected to further reduce communication burdens and improve efficiency for both pilots and controllers.

Mobile Clearance Delivery is currently in an operational test and evaluation phase and is rolled out at five initial airports. Garmin plans a phased nationwide expansion of the service through 2028 and invites user feedback to aid in its development.
