Gartner places Appian first in business process automation
Appian has been ranked number one in two use cases within Gartner's Critical Capabilities report for Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies. The company was also recognized as a leader in the Magic Quadrant report.
Appian announced it has been ranked number one for the "Deterministic Workflow Automation" and "Platform Consolidation" use cases in the Gartner Critical Capabilities™ 2026 report for Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies (BOAT). The company was also recognized as a leader in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant™ report for BOAT.
The BOAT market is experiencing significant growth, driven by evolving automation needs as enterprises shift from task automation to agent-based automation and address the increasing proliferation of AI agents. Gartner projects that by 2030, 70% of enterprises will adopt a consolidated automation platform capable of orchestrating business processes, AI agents, bots, APIs, and human actions, up from 10% today.
Gartner evaluated 20 vendors across five common BOAT use cases. Among those named as leaders, Appian was the only vendor to rank in the top three for all five use cases and achieved the highest score for the critical capability of platform operations and governance. The report highlights that Appian was also the highest-scoring vendor for platform operations and governance.
Appian's platform integrates AI, data management, and process automation. It includes features such as a data fabric to provide enterprise-wide context to AI agents, unified automation that brings together workflows, AI agents, and robotic process automation on a single platform, and agent orchestration and governance.
