Gas Prices Surge Past $4 Again Amid Iran Conflict Escalation

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline has risen above $4 once more this year, a milestone not previously seen in the U.S. This marks a significant jump from the $3.85 average observed last week and a stark contrast to the $3.14 average from a year ago. The renewed upward pressure on prices is attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran, alongside the persistent effects of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on global energy markets.

GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, highlighted that 2026 is the first year to experience two separate surges above $4 per gallon for regular gasoline. The initial spike occurred in the spring during the onset of hostilities, with a second surge materializing mid-summer. Diesel prices have mirrored this trend, also reaching over $5 on two occasions.

De Haan also pointed out that factors beyond crude oil prices are influencing the market, with global refining capacity becoming a key concern. The cost of jet fuel has also experienced a substantial increase, rising 17.6% week-over-week and 61% year-over-year, impacting airline operational expenses.

Regional price variations persist across the U.S. States like California, Washington, and Hawaii are currently reporting average gas prices above $5 per gallon. In contrast, states such as Texas and Kansas benefit from proximity to domestic oil refineries and streamlined transportation, allowing them to maintain lower prices.
