Gasum and Nordic Ren-Gas to Produce Renewable E-methane Starting 2026

Energy company Gasum and Power-to-Gas developer Nordic Ren-Gas have entered into a long-term agreement for the supply of renewable e-methane. Under the pact, Gasum will purchase all e-methane produced at Nordic Ren-Gas's Tampere facility from 2026 onwards and distribute it to its customers. The initiative aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from road and maritime transport.

The Nordic Ren-Gas plant in Tampere will utilize renewable electricity from wind power and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from power plant flue gases to produce e-methane. The process involves generating hydrogen from renewable electricity, which is then combined with carbon dioxide to create e-methane. This synthesized gas is fully renewable and serves as a replacement for fossil fuels in the transportation sector.

E-methane is interchangeable with natural gas and biogas, and when liquefied, also with LNG and LBG. This allows it to be transported and used via existing infrastructure. Gasum CEO Mika Wiljanen stated the agreement is a significant step towards the company's goal of becoming a key player in the e-methane market.

Nordic Ren-Gas CEO Saara Kujala highlighted that the agreement will accelerate the introduction of e-methane to the market and enable the development of further production projects. The Tampere plant is expected to produce approximately 160 GWh annually. Gasum's strategic objective is to bring seven terawatt-hours of renewable gas to market annually by 2027, which would significantly reduce its customers' carbon dioxide emissions.
