Gasum begins biogas supply to Svalbard Airport

Energy company Gasum has commenced supplying liquefied biogas (LBG) to the airport in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Located 1,000 kilometers north of Tromsø, the Svalbard Islands represent Gasum's northernmost and most remote supply location to date.

The deliveries, which began on May 15, 2026, illustrate that renewable fuels can be supplied reliably and safely despite long distances and limited local infrastructure. Gasum transports the LBG from Risavika, Norway, with transshipment in Tromsø before onward travel to Longyearbyen.

Biogas offers a renewable and lower-emission energy source, particularly in areas where the electricity grid's capacity or regularity is uncertain. The biogas supplied by Gasum to Svalbard is produced from organic waste in accordance with circular economy principles.

Trond Jerve, Gasum Norway's Head of Business in Industry, emphasizes the importance of a diverse energy mix for future energy security. "LBG is definitely a part of that mix," Jerve stated. The Svalbard Airport significantly reduces its emissions by switching to biogas compared to previous fossil fuels like diesel.
