Gasum Deploys Bio-LNG Fleet for FuelEU Maritime Compliance

Nordic energy company Gasum is leveraging its fleet of gas-powered bunkering and carrier vessels, which operate entirely on liquefied biogas (bio-LNG), to generate compliance for the FuelEU Maritime regulation. This use of bio-LNG by Gasum's own fleet contributes flexibility and emission reduction surplus to the company's compliance pool.

The fleet includes two bunkering vessels that supply LNG and bio-LNG to ships in ports, and two carrier vessels that transport liquefied gas across Nordic and Northern European regions. Each vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel gas engine, enabling the use of renewable bio-LNG.

"As we are now in the last quarter of the first FuelEU Maritime regulation year, there’s never been a more critical moment for ship owners to act," said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime, Gasum. "Joining Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool is the easiest and most reliable way to secure compliance. Adding our own fleet to the pool as compliance generators helps to secure more compliance surplus, but the amount is still limited."

Using bio-LNG is an effective method for achieving surplus regulation compliance, as its life-cycle emissions are, on average, 90 percent lower than traditional maritime fuels like Marine Gas Oil (MGO). When produced from manure, bio-LNG's emissions can be even more favorable.

Gasum's strategic objective is to significantly increase the availability of bio-LNG to the North-Western European maritime market in the coming years.
