Gasum supplies LNG in Germany's first truck-to-ship bunkering

Energy company Gasum conducted its first truck-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation in Germany on July 27th. The delivery was made to the world's first LNG-fueled research vessel named ATAIR, which is currently under construction at the Fassmer shipyard in Berne.

ATAIR is set to replace the previous ATAIR vessel commissioned in 1987. The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) will utilize the ship for sea surveying, wreck searching, and scientific research. Fassmer shipyard was awarded the contract to build the vessel and executed the bunkering operation with LNG supplied by Gasum.

The decision to equip ATAIR with engines capable of running on LNG stems from LNG's significantly lower emissions compared to diesel-powered ships. Consequently, the new ATAIR complies with TIER III exhaust emission regulations and EPA TIER IV rules for particulate matter. Additionally, the vessel's underwater noise levels have been optimized to protect the marine environment.

Gasum announced its expansion of LNG distribution operations into continental Europe. The company has previously performed ship-to-ship deliveries in Northern Europe, and this first truck-to-ship bunkering in Germany reinforces its commitment to the region. Gasum intends to grow its business presence in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

LNG is considered the cleanest marine fuel available. Its use reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% and improves local air quality. It also meets the emission requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the EU.
