Gasum to construct 62 million euro biogas plant in Sweden

Gasum has committed over 62 million euros to build a new biogas plant in Borlänge, Sweden, with construction scheduled to commence in the spring of 2024. The project has received a 15 million euro subsidy from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet investment program.

The plant will process approximately 270,000 tons of local organic household waste and manure annually. Once operational in 2026, it is expected to generate 133 gigawatt hours (GWh) of liquefied biogas (LBG) per year. The facility will also produce 250,000 tons of recycled fertilizers, which Gasum markets as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based options.

This development marks the second of five large-scale plants planned by the company in Sweden. According to Erik Woode, Head of Production at Gasum, the project is integral to the company's long-term goal of increasing its Nordic biogas production to two terawatt hours (TWh) per year by 2027.
