Gates Foundation Launches AI Coalition for Global Inclusivity

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced the formation of a new coalition comprising 60 organizations aimed at increasing the accessibility and equitable use of artificial intelligence (AI) worldwide. The initiative specifically focuses on developing AI tools for minority languages, with a goal to impact over three billion people within five years.

During the UN week, Bill Gates, chair of the foundation, emphasized at the Goalkeepers event that "increased generosity" combined with the "smart use of AI" can accelerate the fight against inequality. He urged the world's wealthiest nations to increase their international aid and apply AI to lifesaving innovations.

The coalition includes AI labs, corporations, and philanthropic groups such as Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI Foundation. Its objective is to enhance the representation of local languages in AI systems, which are currently often biased due to data scraped from the internet. The foundation has also committed $1 billion toward AI-focused efforts to improve health, education, and agriculture.

Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, stated that despite calls from some major tech companies to slow down AI development, this work must proceed "full speed ahead." He highlighted the role of governments in establishing regulations for issues like cybersecurity and child development, while simultaneously expanding AI's humanitarian applications to underserved communities.

The coalition's efforts will be coordinated by a secretariat monitoring partner commitments. Google is contributing to Project Vaani in India to collect speech data across dialects, and Anthropic is working to improve its AI's language support for African languages.
