GEA launches new methanol fuel system for marine vessels
GEA combines a methanol booster unit and valve train into a new fuel supply solution for ships. The system is designed for newbuild and retrofit projects.

Düsseldorf – At the SMM 2026 maritime trade fair in Hamburg, GEA is presenting its new GEA methanol Fuel2Engine System. The system integrates GEA's methanol Booster Unit and methanol Valve Train into a coordinated fuel supply solution for methanol-powered vessels.
The system is designed for both newbuild vessels and retrofit projects, handling methanol processing, conditioning, control, and injection into the engine. GEA states the solution reduces integration complexity and lifecycle support requirements for shipyards and shipping companies.
A pilot project with the German shipping company John T. Essberger is underway to prepare the system for real-world conditions. GEA will supply the methanol Booster Unit and Valve Train as part of a fuel handling solution for a new generation of methanol-ready chemical tankers, with deliveries planned for fall 2026.
The GEA Booster Unit conditions methanol to the precise pressure and temperature required for engine injection. The Valve Train provides accurate control, safety functions, and nitrogen purging between the fuel system and the engine. Methanol is gaining traction as an alternative marine fuel, and its safe and reliable handling remains a key challenge for decarbonizing the shipping industry.
