Hungarian pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter Plc. has updated the indication for its combined oral contraceptive pill, Rigevidon.

Rigevidon, which contains levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol as active ingredients, is now approved for women aged 18 and older seeking oral contraception. The pill functions through three primary mechanisms: it suppresses ovulation, increases the viscosity of cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration, and alters the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation.

The company emphasizes that proper usage is crucial for the contraceptive's effectiveness. If the efficacy is reduced or if use must be discontinued, alternative non-hormonal methods, such as condoms, are recommended.

The medication has several contraindications, including risk factors for blood clots, certain cardiovascular conditions, hormone-sensitive cancers, and severe liver disease. Specific types of migraine, upcoming major surgeries, or concurrent treatment for Hepatitis C can also preclude its use. Smoking in women over 35 is another contraindication.

Gedeon Richter, a pharmaceutical company with over a century of history, focuses significantly on women's healthcare. It offers a diverse portfolio that includes gynecological products and central nervous system medications.
