Budapest, Hungary – Pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter Plc. has released new findings from a post hoc analysis investigating the hormonal effects of cariprazine, an antipsychotic medication, in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The analysis pooled data from multiple clinical trials to assess cariprazine's impact on prolactin levels and sexual dysfunction, common side effects associated with antipsychotic treatments.

The study analyzed data from both short-term and long-term schizophrenia efficacy and safety studies. Cariprazine was compared against placebo, as well as active comparators like risperidone and aripiprazole, to understand its specific hormonal profile. Researchers aimed to determine if cariprazine contributes to hyperprolactinemia or sexual dysfunction.

Results indicated that cariprazine did not cause hyperprolactinemia. In fact, the drug appeared to help normalize previously elevated or high-normal prolactin levels. Regarding sexual dysfunction, cariprazine showed a lower incidence compared to risperidone and aripiprazole in the analyzed patient groups.

These findings suggest that cariprazine may offer a more favorable hormonal side effect profile, potentially making it a reliable treatment option for patients experiencing drug-induced hormonal disturbances. The results were presented via a poster at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) congress.

Gedeon Richter Plc. is an international pharmaceutical company with a significant presence in Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on central nervous system and cardiovascular therapies.
