Gedeon Richter's Dimia contraceptive pill approved for new indications
Hungarian pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter Plc. has expanded the approved uses for its combined oral contraceptive pill, Dimia (drospirenone/ethinylestradiol). The drug is now also indicated for moderate acne and severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Gedeon Richter Plc., a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Hungary, has received expanded regulatory approval for its combined oral contraceptive pill, Dimia (drospirenone 3 mg / ethinylestradiol 0.02 mg).
The updated approvals include the treatment of moderate acne (acne vulgaris) and severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS), in addition to its primary contraceptive function. Dimia is a combination product containing two types of female sex hormones.
The contraceptive effect of combined oral contraceptives like Dimia is achieved by suppressing ovulation and altering the uterine lining. The drospirenone component in Dimia also offers anti-androgenic and anti-mineralocorticoid properties, which help alleviate PMS symptoms and reduce skin conditions such as acne and excessive oiliness.
The company stressed the importance of reviewing the patient information leaflet, which details contraindications and warnings. These include risks associated with thrombosis, cardiovascular conditions, and impaired liver or kidney function. The leaflet also advises against use in pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or those with specific allergies such as to peanuts or soy. Patients are urged to consult with a healthcare professional regarding their full medical history before starting treatment.
