Gelsenkirchen bank heist inspires "Money Heist" season?

The audacious robbery at Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen, resulting in the plundering of over 3,200 safe deposit boxes and an estimated loot exceeding one hundred million euros, has drawn comparisons to the popular Netflix series "Money Heist."

The operation, which reportedly lasted around 40 hours, appeared highly planned and professional. The perpetrators gained access via a parking garage and drilled through a reinforced concrete wall using specialized equipment. Their apparent knowledge of what specific valuables to target, and how to access them, suggests potential insider information.

Police have established a special investigative unit, codenamed "Kernbohrer" (core drill), to pursue the case. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul has emphasized the perpetrators' precision and meticulous planning. The events provide ample material for thrilling narratives, though it remains uncertain if this will directly lead to a new Netflix season.

Investigators are pursuing several leads, including getaway cars with forged license plates that were later discovered near Dortmund Central Station. The perpetrators' professionalism and detailed knowledge of safe deposit box contents strongly suggest assistance from an insider.
