Gen Z shifts from dating apps to hobby-based meetups

Gen Z is increasingly turning away from dating apps in favor of meeting people through shared interests, according to a new study by events marketplace Eventbrite. The research indicates a growing trend of young adults seeking romantic connections at real-world, hobby-based gatherings.

Analysis of Eventbrite data from January-June 2025 compared to the same period in 2026 shows a dramatic rise in specific event types. Trivia nights have surged by 403%, mahjong gatherings by 235%, and plant swaps and terrarium workshops by 117%. Pilates socials also saw an 84% increase.

Birdwatching meetups have also become a popular venue for connection, with events up 131% and attendance up 82%. Eventbrite suggests these niche activities act as a filter for curiosity and humor, allowing individuals to stand out in a crowded digital landscape.

The shift reflects a broader fatigue with dating apps, where high deletion rates are common. Many young people are now pursuing more "analog" methods for meeting partners, driven by a desire for digital detox and an interest in hands-on hobbies. This convergence suggests that traditional social settings may be regaining popularity for initiating relationships.
