Major technology companies have quietly made generative AI a default assistant for nearly all digital tasks. This shift, which began to normalize around 2024, requires users to actively decline AI's offered assistance, potentially leading to reduced cognitive effort and skill erosion.
The phenomenon is based on the "default effect" in behavioral science, which describes our tendency to passively choose a pre-set option rather than make an active choice. A similar strategy was employed by fast-food chains, where offering "Super Size" options significantly increased sales. In AI's case, this means users must exert effort to say "no" to the ready-made solution AI provides, which is more taxing for the brain than accepting the suggestion.
The effort required to decline is not the sole reason the default effect works. Users may also assume that using AI is the correct decision, especially when companies encourage it. Furthermore, AI usage is becoming a social norm, and people tend to follow social norms.
Research indicates that using AI tools can rapidly degrade skills. When tasks are completed quickly with AI, the brain begins to repurpose neural pathways associated with the previously more complex process. This can lead to skill loss within weeks or months, akin to how McDonald's "Super Size Me" campaign increased overeating, digital AI may reduce thinking and impair cognitive abilities.
