General Mills partners with Ziploc to introduce resealable cereal bags
General Mills has launched a resealable bag design for Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios in partnership with SC Johnson’s Ziploc brand.

General Mills is rolling out new packaging for its Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios brands, featuring a Ziploc-branded resealable seal. The product is currently available exclusively through Walmart’s website at a retail price of approximately $5 for a 14.4 oz box.
According to the company, the development addresses long-standing consumer requests for improved freshness storage. Internal market research indicates that a vast majority of cereal consumers currently employ manual methods—such as folding bags or using clips—to prevent staleness. Emilie Knox, vice president for Cheerios, noted that the company required a solution compatible with its existing high-speed production infrastructure at its Buffalo, New York facility.
While competitors like Malt-O-Meal have utilized resealable packaging for decades, this move marks a significant update for General Mills' legacy cereal line. The company has not announced plans to expand this packaging to its other cereal brands at this time.
This initiative comes as the broader breakfast cereal industry navigates a multi-year sales decline. By improving convenience, General Mills aims to maintain its current market performance, which has recently benefited from strategic price adjustments and brand collaborations.
