Geneva Leads Global Construction Cost Ranking by Arcadis
Arcadis' 2026 International Construction Cost Index names Geneva the world's most expensive city for construction projects. The report highlights increasing client focus on controlling planning and execution.

Geneva has retained its position as the world's most expensive city for construction projects, according to Arcadis' 2026 International Construction Cost Index. London and Zurich follow closely behind, rounding out the top three in the annual ranking of 100 global cities.
The index indicates that the most expensive construction markets continue to be concentrated in established, complex urban centers with high demand and limited capacity for project delivery. While the top rankings remain largely stable, the broader market environment has shifted from inflation-driven uncertainty to a more selective investment phase.
Capital is increasingly flowing into complex, high-performance assets supporting long-term growth, such as modern workplaces, healthcare facilities, laboratories, data centers, and advanced manufacturing plants vital for digital transformation and the energy transition. However, higher financing costs, energy market volatility, and supply chain constraints are pressuring project viability.
Arcadis emphasizes that construction cost is no longer just a price metric. The index identifies locations where cost, capacity, execution risk, and investment certainty converge. The firm stresses that projects must be tailored to actual conditions, and that lower reported costs, such as those found in some Asian or Latin American cities, do not automatically ensure smoother execution, with market readiness and supply chain efficiency being critical factors.
