Georgia School Police Officers Caught Cheating on Safety Training

Nine officers with the Richmond County School System Police Department in Georgia have had their training certifications revoked by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council. The action stems from a state investigation that uncovered alleged cheating on online courses crucial for maintaining student safety.

The investigation, initiated in September 2024, focused on accusations that officers were falsifying their completion of POST-credited online training. Records indicate that officers reportedly shared test answers and screenshots via group text messages, enabling colleagues to pass courses without completing the required coursework. Two specific courses identified were 'Introduction to Human Trafficking' and 'De-escalation for Law Enforcement.'

The Richmond County School System acknowledged awareness of a potential update regarding POST certifications but stated they had not yet received official notification. James Englert, president of the National Association of School Resource Officers, highlighted the importance of the subjects covered and expressed concern that such incidents could unfairly tarnish the reputation of school resource officer programs nationwide.

Evidence gathered during the investigation suggests a departmental culture where circumventing official procedures had become normalized. This case adds to the ongoing debate surrounding the role and oversight of school resource officers across the United States, raising questions about the integrity of training protocols and the effectiveness of ensuring school safety.
