GEOSAT Becomes First European Partner in SDG Data Alliance

Satellite operator GEOSAT has become the first European entity to join the SDG Data Alliance. This coalition aims to accelerate the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Antigua and Barbuda Programme for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) by mobilizing data.

The partnership agreement was signed in New York during the high-level week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. GEOSAT will provide very high-resolution satellite imagery and data to over 3,000 islands across nearly 40 island nations, which are the alliance's target countries.

GEOSAT, recognized by the European Commission and Copernicus as one of only five VHR satellite operators in its category, brings operational experience to the alliance. In collaboration with other partners, GEOSAT will transform images into actionable intelligence to support better decision-making in areas such as land management, agriculture, and coastal monitoring.

The company previously supported the establishment of the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) in 2023 and its first pilot project. GEOSAT has already begun work on initial pilot projects with the Data Alliance. "Satellite imagery and space data are essential assets in helping people adapt to climate change," said GEOSAT CEO Francisco Vilhena da Cunha.
