German Accessibility Law Mandates Digital Inclusion for Businesses
Germany's new Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG), effective June 2025, requires companies to ensure digital products and services are accessible.

Germany's new Accessibility Strengthening Act (Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, BFSG) will come into effect on June 28, 2025, mandating that companies make their digital products and services accessible. This legislation impacts various businesses by requiring compliance for items such as ATMs, smartphones, e-commerce platforms, and ticketing services.
The law establishes uniform technical and functional requirements for products and services. The objective is to enhance the ability of millions of people with disabilities to independently use digital offerings. Regulatory bodies will monitor compliance and can impose penalties for non-adherence.
While the BFSG does not explicitly require external certification, experts emphasize its value. Without expert guidance, companies risk overlooking critical requirements, potentially leading to fines or product recalls. Materna-Gruppe has introduced its own certification process designed to support businesses throughout their accessibility journey, from initial concept to final product.
Improving accessibility not only fulfills legal obligations but can also enhance the user experience for all. Materna's certification model comprises four phases: assessment, consultation, awareness training, and final certification.
